‘Much loved’ ITV medical drama perfect for Call the Midwife fans missing BBC series
Call the Midwife fans wanting more medical drama can stream this similar British series on ITVX for free.
Call the Midwife devotees, craving their next dose of compelling medical drama, are in for an absolute treat.
The most recent series of the beloved BBC drama concluded in March with the passing of Sister Monica Joan (played by Judy Parfitt), leaving the future of Nonnatus House hanging in the balance.

As dedicated viewers will be aware, Call the Midwife first aired in 2012, weaving together powerful stories of childbirth, social hardship, poverty, medical breakthroughs, and life-threatening conditions. Set across the 1950s through to the 1970s, the series is written and created by Heidi Thomas, drawing inspiration from the memoirs of nurse Jennifer Worth.
It delves into the medical struggles faced by the tight-knit Poplar community during an era when the NHS was still in its infancy. Call the Midwife has been commissioned for a sixteenth series, alongside a special prequel that will follow the convent during the Second World War.
A feature film, set overseas, is also in the pipeline, giving fans plenty to anticipate. In the meantime, however, Call the Midwife viewers are encouraged to binge-watch The Royal, which is currently available to stream on ITVX, reports the Mirror.

What is The Royal about?
A spin-off from the much-cherished series Heartbeat, this medical drama centres on the day-to-day happenings at St Aidan’s Royal Free Hospital, which serves a Yorkshire coastal town and its surrounding communities.
The series ran from 2003 to 2011, delivering 87 memorable episodes. The drama was filled with moments of humour and deeply emotional scenes that kept audiences captivated and left them wanting more when the beloved programme eventually concluded.
Set during the 1960s, The Royal didn’t focus solely on the medical challenges patients faced, but also explored the ethical questions these emergencies raised.
Poldark actor Robert Daws took on the role of Dr Gordon Ormerod, while Emmerdale star Linda Armstrong portrayed Sister Brigid.

Michelle Hardwick, who currently appears in Emmerdale as Vanessa, played Lizzie Hopkirk, while Amy Robbins, known for her role as Christina Boyd in Coronation Street, brought Dr Jill Weatherill to life.
On IMDB, fans have expressed their opinions about The Royal, with one viewer commenting: “Fantastic show. I binged the first season over a weekend and fell in love with this show. ”
A second declared, “The Royal centers around a recreation of the medical past,” while a third remarked, “This show is amazingly good. The songs from the 60’s are tastefully interwoven throughout.”
“Interesting and absorbing medical drama. This series centers on a small community hospital in northern England during the so-called swinging 60s,” said another.
Call the Midwife is available to stream on BBC iPlayer. The Royal can be streamed on ITVX
