Yet those seeking programmes similar to Outlander or perhaps even superior to the sweeping fantasy drama created by American novelist Diana Gabaldon need look no further.
Enthusiasts have proclaimed one television series as “better” than Outlander following a Reddit user’s request for suggestions of comparable shows but containing less of the darker content involving sexual violence.
Amongst the suggestions were The Tudors, Downton Abbey, Vikings, The Last Kingdom, Bridgerton, and My Lady Jane.
Nevertheless, another programme mentioned has previously earned acclaim from viewers on IMDb and also airs on Starz, the same American cable channel responsible for Outlander.
One individual remarked about the show, which follows two earlier miniseries: “[H]ere we have an excellent follow-up to the amazing show.”
They continued in their 9/10 review: “Once again, the production in all three shows is absolutely astounding.”
The viewer concluded: “What I love most about all three shows is the depiction of morally grey characters and it is so fascinating to watch because we are all so used to only “good and evil” characters.”
A second viewer praised the “superb” acting and highlighted the production standards, noting the sets and costumes could “rival” Game of Thrones.
They went on to say: “i know its a dramatization of much of real history but it piques my interest to learn more [sic]”. The viewer enthusiastically recommended the series and expressed hopes for additional episodes.
One positive 7/10 review stated: “Honestly, I’d say this show was a great watch. Although there were some historical inaccuracies, overall the show did a great job in casting and moving the story along at a good pace so that viewers get the full experience and information about the time period.”
They continued: “Most things were good and I would definitely recommend to those who like a historical show that has tension, romance, greed, and political intrigue.”
Meanwhile, a 10/10 review was headed “Very good series” with the viewer commenting: “Historically correct or not it’s a great series and very interesting. Give it a go. Acting and scenes are superb.”
The Spanish Princess is a period drama based on bestselling novelist Philippa Gregory’s works The Constant Princess (2005) and The King’s Curse (2014).
The programme serves as a follow-up to television series The White Queen and The White Princess. The Spanish Princess chronicled the story of Catherine of Aragon (portrayed by Charlotte Hope), who became Queen of England as the first spouse of King Henry VIII (Ruairi O’Connor).
The Spanish Princess depicted Catherine grappling with English customs and lifestyle after journeying to meet her betrothed, the heir-apparent Arthur (Angus Imrie).
However, the narrative takes a twist when Arthur’s unexpected demise propels Catherine to take control, striving to maintain peace between England and Spain by seeking to wed her late fiancé’s younger sibling, Henry.
The series was headlined by Hope, who is perhaps most recognised for her portrayal of Myranda in Game of Thrones, and has also featured in Bancroft on ITV, Netflix’s The English Game, and Catch Me a Killer.
Other notable cast members in The Spanish Princess included Alicia Borrachero, Harriet Walter from Succession, Elliot Cowan known for Lost in Austen, Andrew Buchan from Broadchurch, Alexandra Moen, Nadia Parkes, and Laura Carmichael from Downton Abbey, among others.
The Spanish Princess was a 16-episode limited series, with the first eight episodes premiering in May 2019 and the remaining half of the show released in 2020.
The Spanish Princess is available for streaming on Channel 4 and Prime Video now.
