A rampaging incel gunman killed a police officer before being gunned down during an ambush shooting at a Montreal grocery store on Monday — which also left a local Rabbi dead and a policewoman wounded.

Residents in the city’s Côte-des-Neiges neighborhood were told to take shelter at around 12:30 p.m. after a gunman was spotted prowling the area, the Montreal Gazette reported.

Harrowing footage of the shooting shows a pair of officers engaging the gunman, who rushes at them with a rifle and camouflage clothing.

The gunman appeared to have a semi-automatic rifle. Witnesses reported hearing up to 30 shots.

Constable Mohamed Lamine Benredouane, 34, was killed during the shootout. A female officer, who has yet to be identified, was also wounded in the attack.

Benredouane had been a police officer with the Montreal Police Service since 2021, the SPVM announced in a statement.

“His passing is a great loss to our organization. His sense of duty, dedication, and professionalism will forever remain in our memories,” the statement said.

One of the officers could be seen lying on the ground and unresponsive during the shootout. A female officer was also wounded in the attack.

The gunman released a manifesto in support of the Incel movement, a misogynistic subculture of men who are involuntarily celibate, denigrate women, and blame them for societal ills, Radio Canada reported.

Rabbi Michael Moshe Mizrahi, a member of the local Jewish community and the Chabad MADA center, was identified by Quebec MNA Monsef Derraji as the bystander who had been killed.

“He loves to celebrate together with everyone,” MADA community member David Kakon told Chabad News. “Someone who is always smiling, always has a kind word for someone else. Loves his family, loves Israel, and loves being a Jew. We are praying.”

It’s unclear whether he was fatally wounded by crossfire during the shootout between police and the gunman.

Officials declined to identify Mizrahi or comment on the manner of his death late Monday, stating the investigation remains in its early stages.

“It’s a tragedy. It’s a nightmare,” Montreal police Chief Fady Dagher told reporters in the aftermath.

Initial reports indicated that the two officers at the scene were wounded, but Montreal Police later confirmed that one of the cops was killed along with a civilian victim.

“It is with immense sadness that we confirm the death of one of our police officers in the line of duty,” the department said in a statement.

Dagher said the female officer who was injured is now in stable condition and dispelled rumors that there was a second suspect involved.

The shooting occurred near a heavily Jewish section of the city, with several kosher restaurants, a Chabad, Jewish schools, and Jewish community centers surrounding the area.

There is no indication yet of the motive.

The gunman and victims have yet to be identified, and the incident remains under police investigation.

Police noted that it had been 24 years since a Montreal officer was killed in the line of duty, with the last being Benoît L’Ecuyer, 29, who was fatally shot on Feb. 28, 2002.

“Such acts have no place here,” Quebec Premier Christine Fréchette said of the shooting.

Ian Lafrenière, the Minister of Domestic Security, stressed in a press conference late Monday that Montreal is a safe city.

He also urged the public not to become desensitized by footage of the shooting or to fall for rumors circulating online.

“We must remember not to become desensitized by this; they are human beings,” Lafrenière said.

Fréchette and Montreal Mayor Martinez Ferrada said Quebec and Montreal will fly their flags at half-mast in light of the attack.

An active perimeter remained around the crime scene as of Monday night, officials said.
