Kohen Wiley’s Family Says His Mother Repeatedly Warned Officers A Baby Was Inside The Vehicle — But What Happened Moments Later Is Now At The Center Of A Growing Outcry

A TODDLER was fatally shot after cops opened fire on a car in a Walmart parking lot.

The one-year-old’s family is now demanding answers after an officer fired their weapon on a car allegedly fleeing from a shoplifting incident.

The Senatobia Police Department in Mississippi encountered two adults and a child at a Walmart in Senatobia who were allegedly seen fleeing the store and getting into a vehicle, according to the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation.

The police department confirmed they were responding to a shoplifting report “which led to officers discharging their firearms.”

Officers tried to stop the vehicle but the driver drove in the direction of cops and nearly struck one of them.

One officer fired their weapon and the vehicle fled the scene, the MBI said.

The driver drove to a local hospital where a young child inside the car was pronounced dead.

Another occupant of the car sustained critical injuries.

Family members of the victims told WREG the child was one-year-old Kohen Wiley.

“We don’t really know anything, why it happened or whatever,” Kohen’s great grandmother Carolyn Stokes said.

“All we know is that car was shot up and a one-year-old baby was killed.”

“I Refuse To Question God, But I Need Answers,” Kohen’s grandmother Sonya Williams wrote on Facebook.

Video of the vehicle captured by WREG showed at least one bullet hole pierced through the front windshield while the passenger side window appeared heavily damaged.

The family said Kohen’s aunt was driving the car while his mother was in the front passenger seat holding him in her lap at the time of the shooting.

The MBI confirmed the investigation into the officer-involved shooting remains open and ongoing.

The Senatobia Police Department said they are “committed to full transparency” and will share as much information as possible as the investigation progresses.

“I’m just at a loss for words, to be honest. Somebody needs to held accountable for it,” Carlos Haynes, Kohen’s grandfather told WREG.

“It didn’t have to happen this way. It could’ve been handled differently,” LiCole Wiley, another relative, said.

“Senatobia, Mississippi police opened fire in a public setting over allegedly some Pampers.”

One woman who witnessed the shooting recalled seeing officers with the Senatobia Police Department and the Tate County Sheriff’s Office running on foot after the vehicle.

“They’re running through the parking lot and I see the car take off you know, so in my head, I’m like, I know they’re not chasing the car, they don’t think they’re going to catch the car,” she said.

“Then I hear gunshots and I’m like, I know they’re not shooting at a car that’s leaving in a public, this is Walmart.”

The Tate County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were at the Walmart investigating an unrelated incident when “their assistance was requested.”

“The suspects fled the parking lot in their vehicle after an officer fired at the oncoming vehicle,” the sheriff’s office said.

Another witness claimed he heard two gunshots and saw law enforcement waiting in the parking lot as two women exited the store with a box of diapers.

“Everything and everybody involved needs to be held accountable,” LaSandra Williams, another relative, told WREG.

“I’m not giving up until I get justice. It’s a must.”

The Senatobia Police Department has come under fire for its handling of cases in the past, including in 2025 when a woman was tackled to the ground and tased after she allegedly illegally parked in a handicap spot at the same Walmart where Sunday’s incident occurred, according to WREG.

In another case, one officer was fired and others were disciplined after a 10-year-old boy was detained by the department in 2023 for urinating in public in the private parking lot of an attorney’s office.

The Senatobia Police Department did not immediately respond to The U.S. Sun’s request for comment.
